Google’s in Hot Water (Again) Over Data Tracking: Here’s What You Need to Know
April 29, 2025

Google is back in court – and this time, it’s about allegedly tracking users even after they said ‘no thanks’. A federal judge recently ruled a class action lawsuit accusing Google of collecting personal data despite users disabling tracking settings can move forward. A jury trial is now scheduled to begin August 18, 2025.

So why should you care?

If you’ve used Google’s search engine or an Android phone and thought turning off tracking actually stopped the tracking…it might not have. The lawsuit claims Google kept collecting and profiting off your data, leading to targeted ads not necessarily targeted to you.

What's the lawsuit about?

  • Users allege Google stored their browsing history and other data without their consent, even on non-Android devices.
  • Google says its privacy controls have always been clear and available - and that the plaintiffs are misrepresenting how the technology works.
  • A federal judge disagreed, so now the case heads to trial.

This isn't Google's first rodeo either. The company recently agreed to delete billions of data records to settle a separate lawsuit over tracking users in Chrome's private "incognito" mode.

Why this matters:

There’s potential for a class action payout if this case settles. And class action deadlines can be short – so staying informed is your best bet if you want to get what you’re owed.

Key takeaways:

  1. A judge ruled the privacy lawsuit against Google can go to trial this August.
  2. The case centers on data collection – even after users turned off tracking settings.
  3. This could result in a future class action settlement for Google users – so stay tuned.
